1. Restate the bug as: input → expected → actual.
2. Locate the code path with search (rg) before reading files broadly.
3. Create the smallest reproduction (a failing test preferred, script otherwise). Do not fix yet.
4. Form max 3 hypotheses; check each with evidence (logs, prints, git blame/log -S).
5. Fix the root cause, not the symptom. Re-run the repro + suite.
6. Report root cause in one sentence and how the repro proves the fix.
